Parish Nursing is a common label used to describe a unique, specialized practice of professional nursing.  A Parish Nurse provides holistic health care, which focuses on the promotion of health within the context of the values, beliefs and practices of the Faith Community.  The Parish Nurse is a Registered Nurse employed by the Church and acts as a liaison between Church and the Medical Community.  They use both Health Education and Spiritual Knowledge to promote wellness of Body, Mind and Spirit.  The Parish Nurse DOES NOT replace professional services such as Physicians, Home Health, Hospice or Social Services; rather, they help direct members to the best and most appropriate health care providers.  The Parish Nurse DOES NOT replace the Pastor or Ministerial Mission, but enhances its reach and effectiveness…

©       Identifies the health needs of the Parish and plan educational programs

©       Utilizes resources from the Community-at-large to present educational health programs

§         Health Screenings/Health Fair/Wellness Activities

§         Monthly Blood Pressure Screening

§         Blood Donation

§         Health Related Talks to all age groups regarding wellness, illness, and ethical or legal health issues.

§         First Aid/CPR/AED instruction

§         Health Library with pamphlets

©       Recruit/develop volunteer groups

§         Ministry of Care

§         Bereavement Ministry

§         Elizabeth Ministry

Counselor/Advocate/Resource Person

©       Makes home, hospital and nursing home visits to monitor health status, provides a support, listening and prayerful presence during times of concern

©       Provides emotional support, discusses health concerns, encourage compliance with medical treatment and recommend community

©       Assists with providing referrals/resources and services available in the community

©       Assists families exploring options for sick, elderly, or disabled care

©       Assists clients in obtaining what they are entitled to from the health care system
